The River of Heaven

Milky Way

above winter,

the river of heaven

no moon

Photo –“The Infrared Milky Way” This Mollweide projection encompasses the entire sky as seen by the Two Micron All-Sky Survey.

The measured brightnesses of half a billion stars have been combined into colors representing three distinct wavelengths of infrared light: blue at 1.2 microns, green at 1.6 microns, and red at 2.2 microns.

This image is centered on the core of our own Milky Way galaxy, toward the constellation of Sagittarius.

The reddish stars seemingly hovering in the middle of the Milky Way's disc -- many of them never observed before -- trace the densest dust clouds in our galaxy.

The two faint smudges seen in the lower right quadrant are our neighboring galaxies, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds.

Atlas Image (Public Domain) obtained as part of the Two Micron All Sky Survey a joint project of the University of Massachusetts and the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center/California Institute of Technology, funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Science Foundation. http://ow.ly/i5hET

"Mourning Dove (1888-1936) was the pen name of Christine Quintasket, an Interior Salish woman who collected tribal stories among Northern Plateau peoples in the early twentieth century. She described centuries-old traditions with e, the authority of first-hand knowledge, and also wrote a novel based on her experiences." from HistoryLink.org Essay 9512. http://tinyurl.com/6z74xth

Woke up this morning at the end of the road. Somebody up here said Imnaha is the end of the road. Said Oregon is the end of the road state and Wallowa, the end of the road county and Imnaha, the end of the road. I turned my car around on the end-of-the-road road, and I'm headed back to the other coast. Looks like i'll have some time to let my week up the Imnaha River percolate like mergansers flying upstream in formation.
